Driver licence verification for vehicle rentals in the Nordics

For vehicle rentals in the Nordic countries, the borrower must have a verified driver licence before the booking can be confirmed.

If you have already verified your driver licence for a previous vehicle rental and the licence is still valid, you may not need to upload it again. Otherwise, the booking will show what you need to do next.

The borrower must follow the instructions in the booking and upload the requested licence information or documentation.

Who needs to verify their driver licence?

The borrower who makes the booking needs to complete driver licence verification.

The person named as the borrower in the rental agreement must also be the person who drives or uses the vehicle during the rental.

A vehicle rental cannot be booked by one person and driven by someone else instead.

What are the driver licence requirements?

For vehicle rentals where a driver licence is required, the borrower must meet the requirements in the applicable rental and insurance terms.

For Nordic vehicle rentals, the borrower must:

  • be at least 23 years old

  • have held a valid driver licence for at least 2 years

  • be authorised to drive the vehicle type being rented

  • have a driver licence issued in the EEA, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, if a driver licence is required to operate the vehicle

  • be registered as a resident in the EEA, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland

The booking may also show additional verification steps depending on the vehicle type and the verification route available.

Can someone else drive the vehicle?

No. The person who made the booking must be the person who drives or uses the vehicle.

If someone else drives the vehicle, the rental will no longer meet the requirements for the booking or the applicable insurance terms.

Can I rent a vehicle if my friend or family member will drive?

No. You should not book a vehicle on behalf of someone else who plans to drive.

The person who will drive or use the vehicle must make the booking from their own Hygglo account and complete any required verification themselves.

What if my driver licence is from outside the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland?

For vehicle rentals where a driver licence is required, the licence must be issued in the EEA, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland.

If your licence does not meet the requirements, the vehicle booking cannot be confirmed.

What if I do not have a valid driver licence?

If a driver licence is required for the vehicle, you cannot rent that vehicle unless you can verify that you meet the driver licence requirements.

You should not make a vehicle booking on behalf of someone else who has a valid licence.

Why do I need to verify my driver licence?

Driver licence verification helps confirm that the borrower meets the requirements for the vehicle rental before the booking can go ahead.

Vehicle rentals have additional requirements because of the type of vehicle and the insurance terms that apply.

What happens after I upload my driver licence?

Once your driver licence information has been submitted, the verification result will appear in the booking.

If your verification is approved, the booking will be confirmed and the rental can go ahead.

If verification is not approved, the booking cannot continue and will be cancelled.

Any payment you made will not be captured for the cancelled booking. If your bank shows a pending charge or reserved amount, this is usually a temporary hold that will be released by your bank. The timing depends on your bank and is not controlled by Hygglo.
